Despite regulations, bans, complaints, encouraging cooperatives and associations, in many locations ASMs are continuously and rapidly expanding out of control. At the same time, abandoned mines and repositories \u2013 contaminating water, soil, and infrastructures with dissolved metals and acidity \u2013 are often disregarded.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">EPM\u2019s overall objectives are to provide customized remote sensing services aiming:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul\" style=\"margin-left: 30px;\">\n<li>To map ASMs, monitor their expansions and assess environmental impacts;<\/li>\n<li>To map AMRs, monitor mine\/repository stability and assess environmental impacts.<\/li>\n<li>Moreover, since regulators \u2013 within the national legal framework \u2013 are also responsible for ensuring compliance of Large Scale Mining (LSM), products verifying mining operations conformity are additionally considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\"><strong>Who are the users?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul\" style=\"margin-left: 30px;\">\n<li><strong>Regulators<\/strong> responsible for ensuring compliance of ASMs and LSMs with national legal frameworks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-Governmental Organizations<\/strong> working on national and international levels and including watchdog organizations that critically monitor mining activities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consulting companies<\/strong> in the domain of treatment of mine wastes and remediation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multi-disciplinary consulting companies<\/strong> offering services in the fields of applied environmental and social sciences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ASM certification bodies<\/strong> developing standards to transform ASMs into a sustainable and responsible activity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-for-profit and membership organizations<\/strong> developing standards within the mining industry are to be approached as key representatives for technology and service validation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\"><strong>The service<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0;\">Overall, the service<\/p>\n<ul class=\"ul\" style=\"margin-left: 30px;\">\n<li>provides objective and detailed information of:\n<ul class=\"ul\" style=\"margin-left: 15px;\">\n<li>location and extent of artisanal mines,<\/li>\n<li>amount and area of the artisanal mines within the extent,<\/li>\n<li>on-going activities,<\/li>\n<li>environmental impact,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>regularly update the status;<\/li>\n<li>identify anomalous land cover changes which could deal with the development on new mining activities;<\/li>\n<li>monitor anomalous land displacements in particular of tailing dams;<\/li>\n<li>backtrack mining history of repositories and LSMs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Eleven mining demonstration cases are presented and discussed in the\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sarmap.ch\/pdf\/EPM_Leaflet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EPM leaflet<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The team &#8211; <\/strong>sarmap, Cole BakerAssoci\u00e9s, CreaLinQ<\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact &#8211; <\/strong>Francesco Holecz, fholecz@sarmap.ch<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Artisanal and Small-scale Mining (ASM), Abandoned Mines and Repositories (AMR), whether legal or illegal, are associated with negative environmental, social-economic and socio-cultural impacts.
